Hi! I’m Rachel—and welcome to The Purfect Pour, a beginner-friendly wine blog where we swirl, sip, and stumble our way through wine one bottle at a time. This isn’t about being fancy, it’s about being curious (and maybe a little thirsty).
My wine adventure started years ago with a random bottle someone gifted me. They told me, “This is a good one.” I had no idea what that meant, but I nodded, sipped, and hoped for the best.
Fast forward to working in restaurants, where I was told, “Sell these wines. They’re the good ones.” So I did. Cabernet? Red. Drinkable. Moscato? White, bubbly, and sweet. Easy to sell. But let’s be honest—I still didn’t know much about wine.
Then I met Tom—my now-husband and wine sidekick—who had a sommelier mom (yep, he came with a wine pedigree). He loved whites, especially Gewürztraminer. I leaned bolder. Our palates? Opposites. Our solution? Taste everything.
We gave ourselves a $30 wine budget and just started grabbing bottles—Pinot Noir, Claret, Rosé, Sauvignon Blanc—anything with decent ratings and a price tag that didn’t make us sweat. Every bottle was an adventure, and every glass taught us something new. Some of those early picks are still our favorites.
I started noticing that not all wines were created equal—California isn’t Spain, and France is doing something magical over there. The more I sipped, the more I wanted to learn.
At the time, I worked at a sports bar (think chicken wings and Coors Light), where wine wasn’t exactly a hot seller. But when wine did come up, I’d hear:
“I don’t know anything about wine, so I never order it.”
That made me sad. Because wine can be so fun. So joyful. So… delicious. But I get it—it’s intimidating. And let’s be real: nobody wants to gamble on a $150 bottle just to find out it’s not their thing.
So here we are.
Tom, our three cats, and I are on a wine journey—and we’re inviting you to come along. We’re not pros (yet), just passionate people who love exploring what makes wine so magical.
Our goal is simple: work with local spots, meet winemakers, try new things, and share what we learn in a way that actually makes sense. We’ll recommend what we’re drinking, answer your questions, and demystify the world of wine—no velvet rope, no judgment, just good pours and good company.
