Okay, so you’re interested in wine but have no idea how to begin learning about it. It seems really condescending and intimidating. That is how I felt, and sometimes I still do. Hi! I’m Rachel, and I’m just getting my wine adventure started (or, more accurately, restarted). Years ago, I began with a bottle of wine that someone had given me.The consensus was that it was a good one.They must know what they’re talking about if they deemed it good, even though I had no clue what it meant.
Tom was great because he had grown up with a sommelier mother (how lucky am I??) and he liked some wines… if it was white and preferably Gewürztraminer. After clashing so dramatically on taste we decided to open and be adventurous and try out some of these wines that were on the shelves of the stores. At the beginning we started out spending no more than $30 for a bottle…any bottle. We tried Pinot Noir, Claret, Rose`, Sav Blanc, pretty much anything that Wine Enthusiast said had 90pts or more and was under 30 bucks. (Tom knew what Wine Enthusiast was … he was very posh for me!)
Each time we tried a new wine, it was like a whole new adventure! Some of those early bottles are still some of my favorites. I started looking at regions and realized Californian wines are not the same as Spanish wines or French wines and the vast diversity of wine became more evident. Eventually I started talking to friends and colleagues. You see at the time I worked in a sports bar where the patrons drank Coors light and ate fried chicken. Naturally wine was not something we served a great deal of. Occasionally, the subject of wine would come up and inevitably someone would say “I don’t know anything about wine, so I never order it. I don’t know what I like.” That seemed sad to me as I loved the adventure of trying new things, but wine can get expensive and sometimes the best bottles aren’t sold by the glass.
How do I order $150 bottle of something that I don’t know I will love? And that is how we get to this point. Tom and I and our 3 cats are a wine family now, but we are hardly experts — yet! We want to share our passion for wine with you. There are lots of local and not so local wine spots, vineyards and a whole wide world of wine culture to learn. It can be over whelming for newcomers.
So, our goal is to work with local wine spots, restaurants, vineyards and generally wine connoisseurs and learn what makes wine great, how to order it, how to taste and appreciate it. If that sounds good to you come along with us!
We want to answer your questions suggest wines that we are drinking and share what we are learning as we strive to find the Purfect Pour. We are not professionals! We are everyday people learning right along with you with the goal of sharing a little knowledge and perhaps even a bottle or two. 😉
